What is Companion?
Companion is your therapy co-pilot designed by HelloSelf to enhance therapeutic outcomes. It helps members apply what they learn in sessions, supports work between and beyond therapy, and aims to reduce relapse rates.
Companion is not a therapist. It has a friendly, non-human interface — intentionally designed to support therapy, not replace it.
Companion is now available for all your members (14+) to use during between sessions via the free HelloSelf app (download iphone here or android here).
How can Companion help my clinic?
Companion is YOUR therapy-co-pilot, designed by HelloSelf in collaboration with hundreds of therapists, to help you:
1. Grow your impact - Companion does not replace therapy or the therapist, but it helps your members between and beyond sessions. It can:
- Remind members to do the activities you have set
- Check-in on their progress between sessions
- Help members apply their learnings into daily life
- Give members coaching on common challenges such as stress, worry or sleep
This is available now to all your members for between sessions. For access to Companion beyond sessions, ie post-therapy, your member will need to sign up for a Subscription. The Companion will continue supporting them post-therapy and you will be paid to oversee their progress and send them a monthly motivational message.
2.Grow your income - Companion opens up a new stream of revenue, without you needing to commit to doing more sessions. On HelloSelf at the end of therapy, you can offer your member a Subscription to support them in their post-therapy journey.
- Each member creates a Self Plan - an overview of goals, actions and insights that they have learned with you, then Companion supports them to work on these things post-therapy.
- They pay £40/month for the Subscription, £20 pays for the Companion, and you get the other £20 to simply review their progress report, send feedback or a motivational message each month in around 5-10 minutes.
- If there’s any complexity, or the plan requires a big change, you can request they book a booster session with you.
3.Grow your practice - Companion is also now part of the HelloSelf therapist platform.
- It helps you to save time on the admin, so you can focus on growing your business. Not only do we do all your invoicing and payment collection for you, but now the Companion can help you to understand your business better.
- In the My Income section, Companion can help you navigate your historical and projected incomes, and support you in finding ways to grow your practice whether through finding your own referrals or tips on how to unlock more HelloSelf work.
(coming soon!) It also saves you time preparing for sessions. As your co-pilot, Companion’s Brief Me feature gives you a summary of what your member has been up to since your last session. It covers outcome measures, goals, actions and even provides you with the takeaways from the check-ins that it’s had with your member. This equips you with key information so you can tailor the session to have the most impact.
How do subscriptions work?
For Clients - Companion extends the impact of therapy between sessions and after treatment.
- Subscription: £40 per month
- Purpose: A maintenance solution for staying connected to your therapist, continuing personal growth, and reducing the need for repeated acute therapy.
- Goal: Empower clients to become their own therapists — not to foster dependency.
For Therapists - Companion enables therapists to earn recurring income and support more clients efficiently.
- Earnings: £20 for each member subscription (around a 25% income increase).
-
Features include:
- “Brief Me” summaries of client records and caseloads
- Income management tools
- Engagement dashboard showing client activity between sessions
- Therapists typically review client progress monthly (about 5 minutes per person), approve or edit self-plans, and can offer top-up sessions at their own rate (clients receive a 10% discount).
How does my member access Companion?
Members can download the HelloSelf Member App from -
How do I know if my member has a subscription?
Therapists can see if a member has an active subscription in the new Subscription area of the platform.
Is Companion available to CAMHS members?
No. Companion is currently available only to members aged 14 and over.
Can all referral pathways (NHS, AXA, case management, etc.) access subscriptions?
Subscriptions are self-funded by members and therefore available to anyone who chooses to pay for them, except for the NHS members. The NHS would still like the 6 month consolidation period to be adhered to.
Is Companion impacted by SAR requests?
Clinical notes and app data are subject to SARs. However, Companion’s internal AI knowledge about a case is not. This has been reviewed by legal teams, and there is a policy in place to manage this aspect of generative AI.
Can I use Companion for non-HelloSelf members?
This is coming very soon! When it does therapists outside HelloSelf can use Companion as a standalone platform, integrating it with their existing practice.
It can be used across various scenarios, including in-room sessions, as long as a clinician provides clinical oversight.
Do I have to offer subscriptions to my member?
No you do not have to offer your member subscriptions, however your member will not be able to access the beyond session support that Companion offers them, and you will not receive subscription revenue
What if there is risk?
Risk-tracking algorithms monitor every comment and utterance, with the ability to flag and predict risk for notification. While the system can provide real-time alerts, the current design aims to avoid overwhelming therapists, with options for different notification frequencies. The post-treatment model shifts from direct clinical treatment to clinical oversight, similar to managing risk for clients on a waiting list.
